🍽️ What to eat in Zanzibar
Seafood, Swahili curries, spices and the island's famous street food.
The essentials
Start with grilled seafood — kingfish, octopus, prawns and lobster are landed daily. Then try urojo (Zanzibar mix), pilau, biryani and coconut-based Swahili curries.
Street food
Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town turns into a night market: Zanzibar pizza, sugarcane juice and freshly grilled skewers. Choose stalls with a queue and food cooked in front of you.
Spices
Cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper built this island's economy. A spice farm tour is the easiest way to taste and smell them at the source.
JAMBO TIP 👋
Ask for 'pilipili' on the side — Zanzibari chilli sauce is excellent but fierce.
