💡 Money, SIM cards, transport & safety
The practical basics that make a Zanzibar trip run smoothly.
Currency
The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency; US Dollars are widely accepted for tours and hotels. Cards work in larger hotels but cash is king in villages. JAMBO charges in USD and shows an indicative local conversion.
SIM cards & internet
Vodacom, Airtel and Halotel all sell tourist SIMs at the airport and in town — bring your passport. Data is inexpensive; Wi-Fi in beach villages can be slow.
Transport
There is no reliable metered taxi network. Private transfers are the normal way to move between the airport, Stone Town and the beach villages — agree the price before you travel, or book it in advance.
Tipping
Not compulsory, always appreciated. Around 5–10% in restaurants, and a small note for drivers and guides.
Safety
Zanzibar is generally very safe. Use normal precautions: don't leave valuables on the beach, avoid walking unlit beaches alone at night, and keep your hotel's WhatsApp number handy.
Best time to visit
June to October is dry and breezy; December to February is hot and clear. Long rains fall around April and May, when the island is quietest and greenest.
What to pack
Reef-safe sunscreen, a light cover-up for villages, water shoes for low tide, insect repellent and a refillable bottle.
