🕌 Swahili culture & local customs

How to travel respectfully in a predominantly Muslim island community.

Greetings

'Jambo' and 'Habari' both work; 'Karibu' means welcome and you will hear it constantly. A little Swahili goes a very long way.

Dress etiquette

Beachwear is fine on the beach and at resorts. In villages and Stone Town, cover shoulders and knees — a light kanga is the easiest solution.

Ramadan

During Ramadan many local restaurants close during daylight and village life is quieter. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in public areas out of respect.

Photography

Always ask before photographing people, especially women and children.

JAMBO TIP 👋

Take your shoes off before entering a home or mosque, and greet before you ask.
